It wasn’t until the following week that Maya and I saw each other again. The time, I had hoped, would put more of a distance between us, but the moment I saw Maya that day, I knew it hadn’t worked. Not for me, anyway. My heart skipped a beat at the way she smiled at me.

Our conversation before the filming started was a bit awkward, but not so much that anyone else would notice. Mostly just a bit stilted. Thankfully, the filming started with a new challenge being explained to us.

This week, Didi told us, we were going to cook our favorite childhood foods. We had to adapt them to be suitable for an adult dinner party, which thankfully was almost definitely more of a task for Maya than me. If it was me, they would all just be eating chicken nuggets.

“So,” I said once the task had been explained and we’d moved to our cooking stations. “What are you thinking?” Because I knew with confidence that Maya would already be thinking of something.

“My first thought was birthday cake,” Maya admitted. “I only ever had store-bought ones as a kid, but there’s something special about somebody making a whole cake just to celebrate the fact that you exist, you know?”

I hadn’t thought about it that way, but I could see what Maya meant. Like Christmas, the excitement of waking up the morning of your birthday when you were little was unlike anything in adult life.

“But what about you?” Maya asked. “We can’t just do my favorite food, we have to find a way to do yours, too.”

“Um...” I hesitated. Cake was an awesome choice, definitely more interesting than the many different easy-to-cook things I’d had as a kid. My nana had often been working, so she left me at home with things I could just put in the oven or heat up in the microwave.

Thinking about how much of that I wanted to disclose on camera, I gave a small shrug. “Pizza?” I offered. When Maya frowned, I shrugged. “I grew up with just my nana,” I explained. “And she was often busy working, you know? So... pizza was easy. Basically, if it was easy to cook, that’s what we ate.”

After a moment, I glanced at the cameras. Part of what the celebrity winner would get was a donation to help kids who struggled with obtaining food. Maybe…

“Could we do something easy? Something anyone could do at home?”

It was quite a big ask, when it also had to be suitable to serve at an adult dinner party. I almost expected Maya to say no the moment the question left my lips.

But she didn’t. She screwed up her mouth, her whole face expressing how hard she was thinking. I didn’t interrupt, wanting to give her as much time as she needed.

“What if we made pizza into little individual-sized pot pies?” Maya suggested. “We could make the dough ourselves, but anyone watching at home could use one of those kits that you just have to add water to.
